Why “Chronos Collection”?

The Chronos Collection: What’s in a Name?

Before launching this website, I decided I wanted a name for my coin collection separate from myself. I’ve had some fun naming subsets in my collection previously (ie “The Symphony Set” of music-themed coins, “A King’s Ransom” of gold bullion coins from around the world), but hadn’t named the collection as a whole.

I decided on the Chronos Collection. The Chronos name came via a suggestion from my girlfriend. She knows I collect rare coins for several reasons. The gorgeous designs of individual coins, the long-term investment of physical assets, the community and camaraderie with other collectors, and–above all else–the history behind these little pieces of gold and silver.

Time and History

Chronos is the personification of time, and I can’t think of a better descriptor for a diverse coin collection. Whether we’re discussing a commemorative from a few years ago. Or the celebration of peace on silver dollars after the first World War. Or tokens made by savvy business owners three centuries ago. Coins are wonderful physical representations of time and history.

And over time, coins have evolved with the changing times. Sizes were adjusted, metal contents varied (sometimes from one year to the next!), mottos and representations of Lady Liberty have changed to help define public sentiment during the times they were minted. Coin collecting can be more than a hobby or profit-chasing venture; a coin collection can lead to decades of learning and contributing to history by studying and preserving it.

An Online Exhibit

On this website, I’ve tried to acknowledge and honor all of the above as every coin includes a detailed description that includes mintage figures, countries of origin, metal content, design elements, and (when available) who designed them. Some coins also include extended descriptions placing coins in context of world history. Every coin is pictured in detail, and every image can be enlarged to study details.

I’ve also worked hard to give you multiple ways to browse the collection. You can browse by curated sets, coin series, regions or centuries, and coin characteristics.

As my collection grows, so will this website. The news section will include both collection updates on new additions and occasional coin or hobby related articles.

Thanks for visiting, enjoy perusing my collection!
